Why should I expect anything more from a politician?

“I will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 year,” said Obama as a candidate for office.  Less than a month after taking office he raised my taxes $300/year and caused a price spike which costs me another $350/year…a $650 tax increase.

Obama decided to fund health care for middle class kids on the backs of the poor.  He raised taxes on cigarettes over 150% and taxes on hand rolling tobacco from $1/pound to $25/pound, over 2000%.

Poor kids qualify for medicare, but for parents who would rather buy Nintendos, iPods, and Nikes for their kids, they now get free health care on the backs of smokers–a small and poorer than average segment of our population.

There is no reason to use a regressive tax to fund health care for middle class kids.  Some will claim that smokers have increased healthcare costs that must be picked up by others, this is clear and utter bullshit.  Go read this article on USA Today.  Basically it states that after the age of 20, the average healthcare cost for smokers is $326000, with obese people the cost goes up to $370000, and for thin non-smokers it baloons to $417000.  Healthy people cost us all money, why don’t we tax gyms?  Or why not potato chips and french fries?  Why not a fast food tax?  Any of these would change behaviour which costs us money, but a cigarette tax does not.  They are already worried about social security, imagine if folks quit smoking and all lived into their 80s, how much faster would it go broke?

So why am a I surprised when the scum rises to the top?  It seems like I should know better by now.

Edit: In response to a personal email:

“I can make a firm pledge, under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”
–Obama, 9/12/08

I call bullshit.
