Cnet has as interesting blog post. Titled “The ironic rise of the Mac among open source developers” by Matt Asay.

Why is it interesting? To me it is interesting in that it attempts to justify the love of Apple products by otherwise open source activists. Macs are far more proprietary than Windows. There is a continuem, at one end is Linux with open software and open hardware and at the other is Apple with closed hardware and closed software–in the middle is Windows with open hardware and closed software.

There are many good reasons to detest Windows. I am typing this on Linux Mint…my main workstation does not have a Windows boot partition on it. Why? Because I do not like where Windows is going…I got off the band wagon while the getting is good. But to switch to Mac would be counter productive…Apple users are way more locked in than Windows users.

Go to any Mac fan-site and you will find all the reasons that Macsters hate Windows. If you read the complaints you will find that they all apply to Linux more than they do Windows.

Go to any FOSS fan-site and you will find all the reasons that FOSS advocates hate Windows. If you read the complaints you will find that they all apply to Macs more than they do Windows.

The author of the above linked article calls the FOSS advocate users utilizing Macs “ironic”. Ironic….a nice euphemism for schizophrenia. No, these people are only using make believe arguments to justify their any thing but MS attitudes. My guess is that they are mostly young, these sorts of inconsistencies cause major psychic dissonance as we get older.
